Journey to the Center of the Earth

1.) I learned that when you have a lot of lava and a lot of water, it creates evaporation.
I know that in mines there are sometimes diamonds, emeralds, and rubies.
Magnesium is extremely flammable.
2.) The blue electric bird is not a real bird.
Dinosaurs was never alive with humankind.
There is not a center of the Earth.

My Favorite Topic

1.) My favorite topic we learned this year was Index Fossils. 2.)An Index Fossil is a fossil that can be used to give the age of a rock. It includes: Radio-activity, half-life, Radiometric dating, Radiocarbon dating, and more. 3.)Ha-ha funny Mr. Dunn, but I like this topic because it had a little math in it. I love math and anything that deals with math, I most likely like! Another reason is because I think it is amazing how scientist can figure out so much from a fossil just by knowing where it came from and etc.

Big Bang Theory

I think the universe looked liked a, Big Piece of Nothing! I think it was black and boring. There was nothing interesting at all about it so, there is nothing I can really say about it. I think the big "bang" is when the world began to revolve and form bigger and better things. Now that I think about it, I think that the big "bang" are the planets! The planets are the "big talk" about the universe, I think. Scientists are always wondering if there are people on this planet or how much oxygen is on that planet! Therefore, I think the big "bang" is the planets.

Extrasolar Planets

1.) The four ways astronauts can detect extrasolar planets are: Radical Velocity, Astrometry, Transmit Method, and Optical Detection. 2.) I'm going to chose Radical Velocity, it measures slight changes in the position of a star that is tugged towards and away from a planet's gravitational pull. The changes can be detected by measuring the Doppler Effect. When light from a star is moving away from the observer is shifted to the red end of the spectrum, and when the light from a star is moving towards it, it is shifted to the blue end of the spectrum. By measuring the movements of the spectral lines over a period of time, the orbital period of a planet can be determined. 3.)Google says it has detected gas giant planets thought to resemble, Jupiter.

What's your favorite planet?

My favorite planet would have to be Earth. I lived on Earth for all my life. It is the only planet that has humans and I don't know what I would do without friends and loved ones. Earth has new inventions such as technology. It has some bumpy roads with the recession and such, but at least we have oxygen to breathe! All in all, Earth in my opinion is by far the best planet.

Cool Astronomy Topics

The moon is Earth's only natural satellite and the only astronomical body other than Earth ever visited by us humans. The moon is the brightest object in the night sky but gives off no light of its own. Instead, it reflects light from the sun and Earth and the rest of the solar system. The moon is about 4.6 billion years old. The same as Earth! The moon is much smaller than Earth though.

Dark Matter- When the universe was young, it was smooth and had hardly any features. As it grew, it developed more things and became more organized. Our solar system is very organized with planets. Stars collect themselves into galaxies. Our sun is an average star in our galaxy and it is called a milky way. The Milky Way contains about 100 billion stars. That is 100,000,000,000 stars! It turns out there is five times more material in clusters of galaxies than we would expect from the galaxies and hot gas we can see. Most of the stuff in clusters of galaxies is invisible and, since these are the largest structures in the Universe held together by gravity, scientists then conclude that most of the matter in the entire Universe is invisible. This invisible is dark matter.

Apollo Mission- The Apollo program was designed to land humans on the Moon and bring them safely back to Earth. Six of these missions were successfully achieved and completed there goals, which were: 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, and 17. Apollos 7 and 9 were Earth orbiting missions to test the Command and Lunar Modules, but did not return lunar data. Apollos 8 and 10 tested various components while orbiting the Moon, and returned photography of the lunar surface. Apollo 1 and 13 did not land on the moon because of the malfunction in their engines.

Binary stars- is a misnomer because it is a star system made up of most of the time two stars that orbit around one center of mass and the mass is concentrated mainly. Don't confuse it with two stars that appear close together, but in real life they are very far apart. About 8 percent of the stars are visible to us and those star are visual binary stars. Scientists believe that about half of these stars in the sky are part of binaries. The only way that we can figure out the masses of stars is to study the orbital motions of binary stars!

Black Holes- With black holes, the more things that goes inside of them, the smaller it gets. While that happens, it gets more dense. It's force can prevent any light and from letting anything escape from it. Black holes do exists today. Scientists know how they were created, where they are, and why they appear in different sizes. Scientists even know what would happen if anyone was to fall into one. We don't have to worry about any treats to Earth because black holes are light years away.

Is Pluto a planet?

I think Pluto is a planet. It is required as a dwarf planet and as you can see, it has planet at the end. I think its just a special planet and its not the only dwarf plant either. Plus, it is a sphere and all other planets are spheres.

P.S., but on the other hand Pluto couldn't be a planet because it is a dog. lol

Monsoons

1.) Monsoons are seasonal wind shifts.
2.) Two factors that causes monsoons are: the Bermuda High and a thermal low.
3.) Two reasons why monsoons are a good thing are because of breaks and it brings moisture to different places.
4.) Two negatives about monsoons are that they bring floods and droughts.
5.) A lot of people die in India because monsoons can bring so much water and create flooding.
6.) I think monsoons are neutral. Monsoon have good purposes which are that they bring moisture and bring breaks. Monsoons are bad because they will flooding and droughts so, it can be good and bad.

Global Warming

1.) Global Warming or climate change, is a subject that shows no sign of cooling down. Yes, because the rate of warming is increasing.
2. & 3.)The 20th century's last two decades were the hottest in 400 years! The Arctic is in effect of global warming because the ice keeps melting. Coral reefs, which are highly sensitive to small changes in water temperature, are dying off because of the rise in temperature.
4.)Satellites readings of temperatures in the lower troposphere shows no warning of global warming. All predictions of global warming are based on computer models, not historical data. So, global climate computer models are too crude to predict future climate changes. Efforts to quickly reduce human greenhouse gas emissions would be costly and would not stop Earth's climate from changing.

Condensation and condensation nuclei

Five examples of condensation are: Dew on grass because during the cold of the night water vapor attaches to the smooth surfaces of leaves, condensation occurs. Your breath against glass is an example of condensation because of the heat from your breath. When your water bottle is very cold and then you leave it out to room temperature, than condensation occur on the outside of the bottle. If you wear glasses and walk into a warm room, and your glasses fog, its a example of condensation. Water vapor because it condenses and sticks to whatever it touches.

Hurricane Katrina

5.)
1.)I choose hurricane Katrina.

2.)On the Saffir-Simpson scale it was Category 3 and 5.

3) and 4)Hurricane Katrina was one of the worst hurricanes in the history of the United States. It is the deadliest hurricane to hit the United States since the Palm Beach-Lake Okeechobee hurricane of September 1928. Its damages are estimated to $75 billion in the New Orleans area and along the Mississippi coast and it is the hurricane that cost the most almost on the U. S. hurricane records. Hurricane Katrina is responsible for almost 1,200 deaths, including about 1,000 in Louisiana and 200 in Mississippi. Seven other deaths occurred in southern Florida. Katrina caused even more damage in southeastern Louisiana and southern Mississippi.

Air Masses

The four types of air masses are: mT-wet and warm, mP-wet and cold, cP-dry and cold, and cT-dry warm. mT will most likely bring hurricanes because it needs wet and warm air masses. cP will most likely bring a drought because it is dry and cold. cP because Lake-Effects are snowstorms which are cold and on land. Two more air masses are: Arctic which is colder even with dewpoints and Highland which is large elevation changes over short distances.

Greenhouse Effect

The "IR" radiation is when the Earth's surface absorbs the solar energy and releases it back to the atmosphere as infrared radiation, some goes back into the space. The 3 main greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane, and water. I think the greenhouse effect is a very good thing.

Recycling Blog #1

We should recycle glass because if you consider the approximate energy savings when producing various products from recycled materials, rather than “virgin” materials: 30% of less energy is recycled glass. Recycling is better to me because I feel they use it to our better judgement and reusing it just uses the product and throw it away. We can collect aluminum cans, plastic bottles, steel cans, and glass. Collecting these things and recycling them is a way we can help save the Earth. The closest recycling drop center is the Ann St. Landfill at 698 Ann St. in Fayetteville N.C. 9 things plastic cans can be made into are bottles, shower stalls, recycling bins, scouring pads, paint brushes, industrial strapping, drainpipes, plastic lumber, flowerpots. 5 things metal can be made into after being melted are cans, automobile parts, siding, appliances and building materials. The way I can promote others I could do it myself and convince others how helpful it is.

My grade for the 2nd quarter?

I think I deserve at least a 98% for this quarter because I did all of my blogs. I added pictures when i needed them and I wrote a lot for each blog. I answered all I needed to answer. The only reason I won't get a 100% is because of grammatical errors. Other than that, I should at least get an "A".

5 important resources people get from the Atlantic.

1.)The amount of recoverable reserves is enormous: some estimates have ranged as high as one-third of the projected total for all of the world’s recoverable oil. 2.)Natural Gas lies under the continental shelves and slopes and the oceanic rises and plateaus of the Atlantic basin proper and portions of its marginal seas. 3.)The wealth of petroleum is also under the continental shelves. 4.)Fish because you can eat them when you are hungry. 5.)Sand because people use this for homes and because little kids have sand boxes and so on.

Tree Ring Sample

Scientists can find out how old a tree is by counting the rings. The amount of growth depends upon precipitation and temperature. Tree rings are useful records of past climates. They reconstruct long-term climate variations within a certain region. It is an example of absolute dating because it is telling the exact age of the tree.

Unconformities

The order from oldest to youngest is D, A, E, B, C. The conformities are C and E, the line under B is also a conformity. D and A are older than E because E came through D. If D was the oldest, then it had to be younger than A also. C went through all of the layers so it had to be the youngest of them all.

Which is more dangerous: Earthquakes or Volcanoes?

I believe earthquakes are more dangerous. Why? Well, earthquakes can cause disasters without the help of volcanoes. Earthquakes generate seismic waves that can release great energy. The only thing that can be good is if a volcano is on occurring and not many human life is located there, it is not a human disaster. Many people do not feel that volcanoes are really that dangerous. There can be quiet lava eruptions that will give you time to get away and there are violent eruptions. Violent eruptions that occur without warning can sometimes be a huge problem. A dangerous earthquake is the San Andreas Fault. It is located in California and is the most dangerous. It is known as the Cascadia Subduction Zone, this 680-mile long colliding land mass is very powerful. This is in the Pacific Northwest of America.

The Center Of The Earth

1.)The deepest mine in the world is the TauTona in South Africa and it is about 3.6 kilometers deep.
2.)You would have to dig 35 kilometers to reach the mantle.
3.) If I were somehow able to reach the mantle, it would have a lot of cracks and it would be dark. I would see a lot of rocks and brown. In the outer core, it would be getting a little reddish and hot. In the inner core, it would be very hot and have lava splashing up everywhere. When I reach the crust, it will become much cooler and the soil will get easier to dig through. Finally, I see sunlight and I'm back on the surface!

Why do i deserve a good grade?

I believe i should have at least a 90% or higher. I met all requirements but my grammar and punctuation maybe alittle off! I added all the pictures you wanted and i wrote a full length blog for all of your documents. The main thing is that i finished them all! I know people who i wanted to comment on didnt have the requirements and didnt even have the blog itself. My blog is pretty creative almost and im really trying to make good effort on everything i write.

The Rock Cycle

The two main types of Igneous rock are intrusive and extrusive rock. For intrusive rock, granite and gabbro are some examples and for extrusive rock, its andesite and basalt. The two main types of Metamorphic rocks are foliated and non-foliated rocks. For Foliated rock, gneiss and phyllite are some examples and for non-foliated rocks, its marble and quartzite. The two main types of Sedimentary rock are oragnic sedimentary rock, clastic sedimentary rock and chemical sedimentary rock. For organic sedimentary rock, its coal and some limestones which form from the accumulation of plant or animal debris, for clastic sedimentary rock, its sandstone and shale and for chemical sedimentary rock, rock salt and some limestone.

Advice to Mom about Volkswagon GTI

Mom, this car is not that ugly and its in your price range. I know you always wanted a bigger car that could last for a long time and i think this is the car. Its average miles per gallon is 26. i think thats a good price. The colors are neutral and no white! It cost 23,230 dollars and i think thats just a little bit more than the car we have now. Which means, you can just trade in the car you have now and only pay a small amount back. So, i believe this is the car for you.

5 minerals i use

Copper is used in coins. Gold is used in the some of the rocks i have around my mothers garden. Talc is in baby powder and i used that almost everyday after i come out the shower. Diamonds are in the earrings i wear everyday that my grandma gave me for my birthday. Granite is on the island of my counter top and i love to cook so this is something i use all the time.

Whats my Favorite Projection?

Robinson because im use to it. The Robinson is pretty worldwide lol, I can see the whole Earth and look in beyond. Yes, the Mercator Protection is kind of the same but it has more to look at and it seems just a little bit complicated. The Robinson is most common and im use to seeing it and thats mainly why i like it.

What do I want to learn more about?

Astronomy because it is about stars and space and i love that. I look up in the sky and just think about all the things that is going on in space. Sometimes i wish i could actually go up and look around myself. All i have sometimes is my imagination and when i look up i think about it all, whether its what happened in my day or what i wish could happened. Astronomy is just something i can relate to more and i will actually try to learn and pay close attention.
